Still waiting for the Blackhawks to land a top defenseman. Waiting. Wait. Ing.

It has been 10 days, and I still dona€™t get it. TheA Blackhawksa€™ signing of backup goalieA Cam Ward, I mean.

Backup goalie was a need, yes, but not their biggest need. A top defenseman was their biggest need. Still is, as a matter of fact. Maybe Ia€™m missing something, but here are a couple things I know:

While he won aA Stanley CupA in 2006 in his rookie season, Ward hasna€™t been to the playoffs in nine years. He has not registered a save percentage above .920 in seven seasons. His goals-against percentage a€“ the percentage of goals he allowed relative to theA NHLA average a€” has been below the league average each of the last six seasons.

This is the guy to whom GMA Stan BowmanA couldna€™t wait toA give $3 millionA and a no-move clause?

I understand wanting a veteran backup, but geez, Warda€™s save percentage last season was worse than Anton Forsberga€™s. Same goes for Warda€™s goals-against percentage.

If Ward has to carry the Hawks in place ofA Corey Crawford, it looks like hea€™ll carry them into the lottery again.

Wea€™re talking about the most important position on the ice, one that helped kill the Hawksa€™ playoff hopes last season. But if the Hawks arena€™t lying about Crawforda€™s recovery, then it seems like Bowman coulda€™ve used the millions he spent on a backup goalie to give the Hawks more flexibility in trading for the No. 1 defenseman they need because Duncan Keith isna€™t that guy anymore.
