The Colorado Avalanche couldn't have played much better for the first two periods of their 5-2 loss to the Nashville Predators in Game 1 of the Western Conference First Round on Thursday.

They were aggressive, taking a 1-0 lead on defenseman Nikita Zadorov's goal at 6:36 of the first period. They weren't rattled by the rowdy Bridgestone Arena crowd and they finished the second period tied 2-2 with the Predators.

Colorado put itself in a good spot. Then the third period began.

"We were sloppy," forward Mikko Rantanen said. "And they're too good of a team to be sloppy against. We have to bear down. We know if we play a good three periods we have a chance to win."

There's little room for error in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, especially against Nashville, which won the Presidents' Trophy this season and reached the Stanley Cup Final last season. Game 2 in the best-of-7 series is at Bridgestone Arena on Saturday (3 p.m. ET; NBC, CNBC, SNW, SNP, TVAS).

"We responded well, we just need to play 60 minutes," forward Gabriel Bourque said. "Just be consistent at the blue line, get the puck in and out of the zone and keep working hard."

Colorado is young and inexperienced but did not look intimidated. Top-line forwards Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon and Rantanen each had three shots against Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne, who made 25 saves on 27 shots. MacKinnon and Rantanen each had a breakaway opportunity denied by Rinne.
