Six NHL coaches on the hot seat: Which team will be first to make a move?

An oddity of the 2017-18 NHL regular season is that not a single coach has been fired. Five coaches were fired in-season in 2016-17.

It may mean that several coaching changes will occur in the offseason.

Here are six vulnerable coaches:

Alain Vigneault, New York Rangers: The Rangers have committed to a rebuilding plan, which usually means giving younger players expanded opportunities. Vigneault has a reputation for being tough on younger players. He's been second-guessed on how he's handled Pavel Buchnevich. The change in direction would seem to dictate a change behind the bench.

Jeff Blashill, Detroit Red Wings: The Red Wings have a personnel problem, not a coaching problem. The Red Wings have a new arena and selling tickets isnt as easy as it once was. Firing a coach is viewed as a team embracing a new direction. No one is sure what is going to happen with general manager Ken Holland, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

If Blashill is fired, it will be under the banner that the teams younger players need to listen to a different voice.

Todd McLellan, Edmonton Oilers: McLellan likely will pay a price for the Oilers disappointing season. GM Peter Chiarelli also seems vulnerable because he put this flawed roster together. McLellan is respected around the NHL. If the Red Wings make a change, McLellan might be a candidate in Detroit. He was an assistant there under Mike Babcock.
