Intrigue continues as Jackets dont ask Hartnell to waive no-trade clause

The Blue Jackets had until 5 p.m. Monday to ask veteran wing Scott Hartnell to waive the no-move clause in his contract, and the deadline came and went without the two sides touching base.

As with so many moves yet to happen as the NHL braces for the expansion draft " the Vegas Golden Knights will come to life June 21 " this one requires interpretation.

It could signal that the Blue Jackets already have agreed to a trade with Vegas, one that would not require general manager Jarmo Kekalainen to shuffle his protected list and pull back a promising young player such as forward Josh Anderson.

As it stands, the Blue Jackets are certain to protect forwards Brandon Dubinsky, Nick Foligno and Hartnell as all three players have no-move clauses in their contracts.

That leaves only four forward spots for seven players: Anderson, Cam Atkinson, Matt Calvert, Boone Jenner, William Karlsson, Brandon Saad and Alexander Wennberg.

Exposing the 23-year-old Anderson, who had 17 goals in his first full NHL season, would almost surely put him in a Vegas sweater under normal circumstances.

But its all a moot point if Kekalainen and Vegas GM George McPhee have agreed to a deal. The NHL wants all trades to be unveiled on the night of the draft.
